Three Wise Men Christmas Horse Brass With Getts On Reverse. This horse brass is known as "The flight to Egypt" There is a slight crack in the brass as shown in the pictures, this is hard to see and does not affect the horse brass. This is reflected in the price. A very Impressive Collectable Item with lovely detail. The patina reflects the age of this horse brass. The origin of the Horse Brass goes back many centuries, when man first used the horse extensively on the land. The superstitions prevalent at this time required a symbol to protect the horse from accident or injury and Horse Brasses were believed to have the supernatural powers to ward off evil spirits and prevent catastrophe. Most cast brasses display the small stubs on the reverse commonly known as "getts", which was probably brass casters jargon for these projections (which were originally an inch or two long), that were needed to, "get hold" of the brass in a vice, in order to finish it with a file. A horse brass is a brass plaque which was used used for the decoration of horse harness gear, especially for shire and parade horses. Horse Brasses became very popular in England between the mid-19th century until their decline alongside the use of the draft horse, but they have now become a collectors item and they make lovely wall hanging and often can be found decorating pub and Inn walls.
