ITEM DESCRIPTION (16817): Woman's folk costume from the town of Cieszyn, which is divided by the Polish-Czech border and has a shared costume tradition. The costume is of recent production that I suspect was made in Poland between 1990-2000. The exception are the silver clasps on the bodice front, which are noticeably older. I suspect that the handmade cap could also be a generation of two older, but still from the second half of the 20th century. The black velvet bodice is embroidered by hand and embellished with small beads and sequins. The clasps on the front at called hoczki in Polish and are made of silver. There are several hallmarks stamped on them. These are very rare and collectible today and significantly increase the value of this wonderful ensemble. The skirt is masterfully gathered and pleated into the waistband, which is sewn together with the vest to form a single dress garment. There is a wide blue ribbon sewn around the bottom of the skirt. The blouse is made of white cotton with eyelet trim cuffs and collar. The apron and kerchief are made of vibrant synthetic fabric that was carefully chosen to imitate the original silk aprons worn in the region. Under the kerchief there is a specially hand crocheted cap with bobbin lace along the front that sits on the forehead. Also included is a white cotton underskirt with trim around the bottom edge, which is shown in the last photo. It has an elastic waistband. There is a burgundy ribbon sash included that ties around the waist. The costume is a good large size and comfortable for modern wear. Please note that the vest is cut very low so it will accommodate a range of bust sizes as the bulk of it sits lower on the chest. The shoulder straps can be let out to fit even larger. Measurements are approximate and taken with article(s) laying flat: Vest - across front: 21" between underarms Vest - length: 16" (shoulder straps can be let out to be longer) Waist: 38" around Skirt - length: 35" CONDITION: Excellent condition without any noticeable issues. The only thing worth noting is that the upper sections of the blouse cuffs were once attached to the sleeves to keep them raised upwards, but have come lose. This can be easily fixed with a few stitches. A note regarding condition: All of the costumes and textiles that I sell are vintage and have typically seen decades of use resulting in expected wear and tear that add to the history and authenticity of each piece. In case of above-average wear, I will mention any significant damages and heavy signs of use. Depending on the age, materials, and condition, I often hand-wash more durable, colorfast cotton and linen textiles, but embellished garments, heavier wool pieces or items made from silk or fine fabrics are sold in the original, unwashed condition. Small holes or stains, missing sequins/beads, worn trim, and other marks related to standard wear are common and do not detract from the value of most pieces.
