The buccal fat is a fat pad that's located within the cheek area in this region. When people come in to discuss buccal fat pad removal, what we're looking at is trying to assess that they have some fullness in this region, specifically. What people tend to complain about is having some larger or chubby cheeks, and they want to improve that and have a little bit more sleek or contoured facial features. People who are good candidates for buccal fat surgery have actual buccal fullness in this area, specifically. One thing that's very common is for people to come in and feel like they have kind of a big or round face or very chubby cheeks, but they don't know why. And so there's a couple of important things that we look at when we're discussing options with patients. Number one, we can really assess how high their cheekbones are. Because if their cheeks are a little bit low or flat, then that can give an additional contour to patients where they don't actually need anything else done. Similarly, we can see if they have some fullness in this region of their cheek. So what we were trying to accomplish with facial contouring surgery is simply highlighting lights and also improving shadows. So if in the cheeks, we can actually highlight the cheeks by adding things like filler to raise where the light is hitting on the cheek. Similarly, below the cheek, we want to create shadowing and remove volume at this level. If they have fullness in the posterior aspect back here, we can actually do Botox to what's called the masseter muscle.
