Chelsea could reportedly still make a move for Manchester United defender Harry Maguire before the summer transfer window shuts next week.
According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea may try sign the Man United and England centre-back if they fail to land priority target Wesley Fofana from Leicester City.
The report suggests Maguire is emerging as an alternative target for the Blues.
It is understood they’ve not yet given up hope of signing 21-year-old centre-half Fofana, though.
Incidentally, the Leicester star is reportedly “obsessed” with the idea of a transfer to Stamford Bridge this summer.
Chelsea could move for Maguire
For certain, Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea squad needs an extra recruit in defence to reinforce their centre-back options.
Maguire, whose form at Old Trafford has dropped off massively in the last year, should fall into the category of an extremely risky target.
The £190,000-a-week ball-playing defender has proven on the international stage with England how effective he can be. He’s shown glimpses in a United shirt of his physical qualities, too.
Unfortunately, his confidence looks at an all-time low right now.
The fact he was dropped from the starting line-up at the weekend by United boss Erik ten Hag suggests he could be set for a spell out of the side, which is a fair call when you see how dramatically his form has fallen off.
Described as “excellent” by Pep Guardiola back in 2019, Maguire looks a shadow right now of the player he can be.
The proof is there that he can be a top operator in a back three, but surely there are too many red flags that should steer Chelsea away from signing him.
Hopefully, Fofana’s future can be resolved and he ends up joining the club.
