Cricket; South Africa collapses to 34/3 against New Zealand. Fans React.
South Africa started day two of their first test against New Zealand on the backfoot, but things only got worse.
New Zealand began the day’s play with a 21-run lead and soon piled further pressure on the Proteas side. Henry Nicholls (105), Neil Wagner (49), Tom Blundell (96), Colin de Grandhomme (45) and Matt Henry (58 not out) helped New Zealand to 482, holding a lead of 387 runs.
Matt Henry also became the first number 11 to score 50 runs in a test match, following on from the seven wickets that he took in the first innings.
South Africa’s batsmen then hoped to emulate the New Zealand batting display but once again collapsed. At one stage the Proteas were only on four runs for the loss of three wickets. Sarel Erwee was dismissed for a duck as was Dean Elgar, while Aiden Markram was out for only two, Sport24 reported.
South Africa ended the day on 34/3, a massive 353 runs behind New Zealand’s first innings total. Temba Bavuma remained not out on 22, the only glimmer of hope for South Africa, CricInfo reported.
South African fans though see little hope left for the team and took to social media to make their feelings known.
@tjsmileymnisi1:
4-3 is the worst score I've ever seen in test cricket. Are you saying that you have lost three wickets and only scored four runs? 1, 2, 3 and 4 for your entire top-order?
What #ProteaFire?. The Proteas went to New Zealand and embarrassed South Africa.
Get them next time#NZvSA
